Conceived as a 'counterblast' to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's India Wins Freedom (1959), India Wrests Freedom (1982) offers a meticulously researched and documented (with inputs gathered personally from participants in the clandestine movements) account of the militant underground challenging British rule, leaving several iconic martyrs in the process, some hanged, some gunned down in encounters. The author's literary flair offers a dramatically charged 'history', narrativizing acts and events not recorded or recounted before. Though he concentrates primarily on two stellar figures-Hemchandra Ghose and Subhaschandra Bose and two organizations-Bengal Volunteers and the INA-he weaves in their connexions with revolutionaries in other parts of India and abroad; and how it all affected and in-spired Saratchandra Chattopadhyay to write his Pather Dabi; and how the present author's early interactions with the novelist set him on his trail.
